Better ship evolution

The current ship evolution is a bit incomplete in my view. It starts with the 2 canoes, basically stone age tech, then it goes on with the paddle boat, and the big wooden transport boat, which are tech of the industrial evolution (and in the case of the non-steam-engine paddle boat pre industrialisation?). So my suggetion is to add more boats to fill this huge leap with boats. The new boat evolution could look like this: Small sailboats which were common during the antique in the mediteranian sea. Then later a bigger sailing ship (mby something in between the medieval cogs and the more modern sailing ships) and after this a steam engine paddle boat and after this the allready existing steam engine wooden transportship. The existing non-steam-engine paddle boat still could used beside the steam-engine paddle boat and be a cool (and most important: small) sidekick, which would still be very usefull in narrow rivers and artificial canals, that can not be used by the wider boats/ships.

This would strongly push water-based trade routes, as by the time reasonably fast boats are available road networks have already been constructed.
